The vegan version of BalanceOil+ uses microalgae as its source of long-chain omega-3, together with Ahiflower® oil as a complementary source of omega-3 precursors.
While microalgae is the original source of marine omega-3 in the food chain, the strains most commonly cultivated for commercial vegan omega-3 oils today are typically richer in DHA than EPA.
This does not mean that algae in general are naturally DHA-dominant; many marine algal species have other fatty-acid profiles, including EPA-rich and mixed EPA+DHA profiles.
DHA-dominant vegan oils are mainly common because those strains have so far been easier to cultivate at industrial scale.
To create a broader omega-3 profile, BalanceOil+ Vegan combines a microalgae oil that provides both DHA and EPA with Ahiflower® oil, which provides stearidonic acid (SDA).
SDA is an omega-3 fatty acid that the body converts to EPA more efficiently than the shorter-chain plant omega-3 ALA found in oils such as flax or chia.
This combination allows the formulation to deliver meaningful exposure to both DHA and EPA in a ratio that more closely resembles that of fatty fish.
